FITTING THE NFL MOLD
Ideally, a TE will have a height between 6'4" and 6'6", weigh somewhere between 245 and 260 lbs, and have an arm length over 33". While blocking is a great trait to have, we want to look for TEs who have receiving upside. Therefore, the most important tests to predict success at the next level will be the 40-yard dash, the 10-yard split, and the vertical jump. We're looking for scores around 4.6-4.75 for the 40, 1.55-1.65 for the 10 yd split, and 32-36" for the vertical. Loveland declined to participate in the Combine drills due to his belief he was a lock to be a first round draft pick. Physically, he has the build to be successful at the next level.
COLLEGE PRODUCTION
Two huge factors that scouts are looking for at this position are: Do they have consistent hands to be a QBs safety valve and are they truly a TE or an OL or WR in disguise? Nobody's numbers in this draft are more deceiving than Loveland's. His most receptions in a season were 56, his highest receiving total was 649 yds in a season, and he never had more than 5 TDs in a season. Those are very weak numbers until you realize he had a college dominator score of 49.6% putting him in the 99th percentile in total yards and TDs for his team. When you run the ball 60% of the time, there isn't a lot of receiving work to go around.
WATCHING THE TAPE
Loveland isn't going to wow anyone with his speed, but he is so large he is a nightmare to tackle one on one in the open field. More often than not it is taking two defenders to bring him down. Once the ball is in his hands, he is able to shed defenders and keep his legs churning to pick up additional yardage. He is also a headache for defenders in the redzone. He doesn't give up on a play and will keep moving and looking for an open zone to help his QB. He isn't a guy who is going to consistently make highlight reel acrobatic catches but will consistently catch accurate balls and be a dependable safety valve.
THE LANDING SPOT
The Bears selected Loveland as the first TE with the 10th pick in the draft. He will slot in behind Cole Kmet in the lineup which will limit his opportunities in his rookie year. The Bears have an out with Kmet's contract next year and I expect them to utilize that out to move onto Loveland on a cheaper contract. The Bears are doing everything they can to make Caleb Williams successful and Loveland is in their long-term offensive plans.
WHERE TO DRAFT HIM
When it comes to redraft leagues, I would stay away from Loveland this year. He just isn't going to see enough targets to be worthy of a roster spot. In Dynasty rookie drafts, Loveland is a first round talent that could start providing dividends in 2026.
