This is an extremely interesting matchup this weekend, as it is both critical for the La Liga title race, and because these clubs will immediately rematch on Wednesday in the Champions League Quarter-Finals.

Barcelona currently sit in first place atop the La Liga table, 4 points clear of Real Madrid in 2nd.

Atlético Madrid sit in 4th and, while they’re only a point off of 3rd place, they’re 16 points off of Barcelona and 13 points ahead of 5th place. In other words, they’re not in the title race but are solidly in the top 4, earning a Champions League berth for next season.

Both clubs will be looking to build momentum heading into Wednesday’s Champions League clash. However, Barcelona have significantly more incentive to get all 3 points and maintain their lead atop La Liga.

Atlético Madrid are still alive in the Copa del Rey, realistically their best opportunity to secure a trophy this season. While both clubs will prioritize the Champions League, Barcelona will also prioritize La Liga while Atléti will prioritize the Copa del Rey.

Bottom Line: Barcelona are scoring machines and have more motivation to succeed in La Liga than Atlético Madrid. Both clubs will want to get the momentum ahead of their UCL clash, but Barça have the healthier squad and enough quality to win on the road.
