Rookie Review: Carnell Tate’s Fantasy Outlook
FITTING THE NFL MOLD
Tate has the frame that teams look for as he is tall enough to be an outside receiver yet light enough to bounce inside as well. Tate has incredible hands which was highlighted by not having a single drop last season. He has always been a highly productive receiver, and the concern has been about his athletic measurables. He ran a slower than 4.5 40 time putting him in the bottom 4th of receivers who ran at the NFL combine. He was also the 4th slowest receiver at the 10-yard split only 0.02 away from tied for last place. Not everyone needs blazing game changing speed and Tate’s hands more than make up for his combine times.
WATCHING THE TAPE
Tate didn’t do the vertical leap, but I bet he would have been near the top because he is elite at climbing the ladder and getting up to attack the ball Mossing defenders. He has great ball anticipation and looks the ball into his hands making him an uber reliable receiver. He has fast foot speed allowing him to fire in different directions and alter speed instantly. He makes up for a lock of athleticism with his crisp route running. He isn't a super exciting prospect, but he is very reliable and should translate effortlessly to the next level.
THE LANDING SPOT
With Reese and Styles both on the board, it was surprising to see the Titans draft Carnell Tate. This showed they are committed to helping their young QB and improving the passing game. Tate should step in and be the WR1 the moment he steps on the field. They re-signed Calvin Ridley and brought in Wan’Dale Robinson to boost the passing game but if we’re being honest with ourselves, Ridley has underperformed for years now and Robinson was a massive overpay by the Titans. He won’t be a top 10 receiver in terms of targets but he should lead the rookie receivers.
WHERE TO DRAFT HIM
In Dynasty leagues, Tate should be drafted between the 1.02 and 1.04. The only two you can make a case for besides Love are Mendoza and Tyson. In redraft leagues, he is somewhere between WR 25 - WR 35. You should aim to draft him somewhere in the 5th or 6th round in 12-team leagues.
