Rookie Review: Omar Cooper Jr’s Fantasy Outlook
FITTING THE NFL MOLD
Omar isn’t a player that jumps out at you when looking at him on paper. He has average size and athleticism and had a decent college career but never had over 1,000 yards in a season. Despite all this, he was the clear WR 1 on the National Championship winning team.
WATCHING THE TAPE
Cooper has elite balance with the ball in his hands and is incredibly slippery in the open field. While he isn’t a burner, he has more than enough speed to punish defenders who take a bad angle. He runs like a RB and bowls over defenders and leaves them hanging on him like a dad playing with his kids in the back yard. His ability to keep his feet in bounds while running on the edge and dodging danger may be the best in the class. He cuts on a dime creating separation from defenders and making them look silly. His hands greatly improved in his final season.
THE LANDING SPOT
Cooper Jr should step in and be the WR 2 behind Garrett Wilson and see the field plenty starting Week 1. Cooper Jr will be on the field for a majority of the 3 WR sets but could get bumped by Adonai Mitchell in certain 2 receiver sets. The Jets also drafted Sadiq earlier in the 1st round and with the emergence of Mason Taylor in his rookie season last year, we could be in store for more 2 TE sets. None of this concerns me about OCJ’s workload. The biggest negative factor for him will be that he is likely in store for a full season of poor QB play.
WHERE TO DRAFT HIM
In Dynasty leagues, he should be drafted in the later part of the first round. In redraft leagues, he’s a WR5/6 late round flyer. He doesn’t have a high ceiling and his floor is going to be near 3 or so points due to the factors against him in NY.
